Sprint 6 - Open Center (Sprint 6-OC)
A new concept, providing an open center to allow unobstructed air bag deployment.
A flat gear with 11.5 inches (290 mm) inside diameter and 18 inches (460 mm) outside diameter is clamped to the vehicle steering wheel.
A stationary aluminum housing containing a ball bearing cover for the moving gear contains two drive motors, on the left and right sides. The motors extend vertically to provide hand-holds for driver safety. Each hand-hold has a strip-switch, which perform the same functions as Excitation and Start Program switches on Sprint 3 machines. The cover extends 2 inches from the vehicle steering wheel. Total machine weight is 17 pounds (7.8 kg)
For passenger cars the system accommodates steering wheels from 13 inches (330 mm) to 16 .5 inches (420 mm). For trucks, it fits steering wheels from 15 inches (380 mm) to 20 inches (500 mm). Performance is the same as Sprint 3: over 60 Nm at speeds to 1200 deg/sec.
The operation is similar to Sprint 3. When not excited, the driver steers normally, with his hands on the vehicle steering wheel. When the driver grasps the right hand-hold, the motor is excited, and under servo control, but with a zero command, so that the steering is locked in the straight ahead direction.
When the driver grasps the left hand-hold, the program takes control and the program starts immediately, or when the vehicle speed drops to the test speed. Releasing the Program switch pauses the program, holding steer at the current position. Releasing the Excitation switch always reverts to manual control.
The Sprint 6-OC was designed for System 4. In that usage power is applied directly to the motors from servo control electronics in the steer tray. The Sprint 6-OC can be used as a direct replacement for the normal Sprint 3 machine if the Sprint 3 machine-mounted servo control is included in the Sprint 6-OC machine. The control electronics are included in a module that plugs into the cover of Sprint 6-OC. The modified machine is designated 6-OC3.
Specifications for Sprint 6-OC-3 are the same as Sprint 6-OC.
Sprint 7 - OC
The Sprint 7-OC is a heavier-duty version of Sprint 6-OC, using larger motors. Capability is over 120 Nm at up to 1200 degrees/second for Sprint 7-OC in the “A” version with E-Motors and over 200 Nm at 500 degrees/second in the “B” version with G-Motors.
