Steering Machines

Heitz Sprint 3
"The Old Reliable Programmable Steering Machine"

Sprint 3 is the “Old Reliable Programmable Steering Machine” in production since 1997, with 70 units in use worldwide.

Sprint 3 was the vehicle for development in 1997 of the innovative “ATI Rollover Test Protocol” with roll rate feedback and automatic start program at a preselected  speed.

That protocol and machine formed the basis for NHTSA’s rollover research.  Sprint 3 was also the basic machine used in development of FMVSS 126.  Sprint 3 became the standard machine for NHTSA contractors for NCAP and FMVSS 126.

Sprint 3 is the prototype for the operation and specification characteristics for System 4 steering machines.

Heitz Sprint 4
Sprint 4 is mechanically identical to Sprint 3, but it has System 4 electronics.  In Sprint 3, the servo electronics are in the machine.  In Sprint 4, they are in the System 4 steer tray, with extensive firmware control.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
Installation and operation are the same as Sprint 3, except that in Sprint 4, program RESET is automatic.

SPECIFICATIONS
Specifications are the same as Sprint 3.

Heitz Sprint 4L
Sprint 4L is a lighter version of Sprint 4, by using stronger, neodymium magnets to reduce motor length and weight.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
Both are the same as Sprint 4

SPECIFICATIONS
Sprint 4L specifications are similar to Sprint 4 except that max torque is 55 Nm at 1200 degrees/sec. and the installed weight is 24 pounds (11kg).

Heitz Sprint 5

Sprint 3 and Sprint 4 machines have two motors driving an internal gear, with torque signal derived from the measured current through the servo motors.

In order to increase overall torque accuracy, Sprint 5 uses a single larger neodymium motor, with a two-stage planetary gearbox and a precision Honeywell torque transducer.

Handwheel displays include speed, steer angle and torque.   A handwheel switch provides Auto Zero and R-CAL.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
The same as Sprint 4

SPECIFICATIONS
The same as Sprint 3 except that overall torque accuracy is ±1 percent.  Installed weight is 25 pounds (11.5 kg).
